Guest Speaker  - Geoff Simpson
President Paul introduced Geoff Simpson - the Chief Scientist for Environment, Heritage and Culture.
Geoff gave us a passionate talk on the culture of Aboriginal Australia and how we can apply
the ideas that are thousands of years old to today.
Geoff gave an overview of a system of sustainability for caring for our country that has lasted
for over 40,000 years. It focuses on looking after species and creating a feeling of belonging to the
land.
Geoff explained that aboriginal people are born into a Totem Species and your job is
to ensure that species has food and its environment is protected.
Each species has its own language, story, song and dance and the core value is Belonging to the country. The culture has elements of planning, clear roles, accountability and celebration.
Geoff finished with a call to action - to foster a feeling of belonging, and to experience and
create a connection to the landscape by simple things such as bushwalking. It is up to us to
ensure a healthy sustainable landscape is handed on to the next generation.
