President's Report

Presidents Report 30th October 2018

Thank you to Paul Milde for chairing the club meeting last week.

Big thank you to the Men’s Shed located at Ashmont for hosting the club last week for our club vocational visit.

Our Club Annual General Meeting will be held on the 13th November. Agenda, draft minutes and audited financial accounts will be presented. President Elect David will be presenting the Board for 2019/20 period.

Mini Board meeting to be held directly following today’s meeting.

In relation to District Drought Relief scheme, the seven presidents of Wagga Wagga Rotary and Rotaract clubs met on Wednesday 24th October to discuss matters. A further discussion will take place at a meeting of Presidents to be held on Wednesday 7th November. Representatives of Country Women’s Association, Rural Counsellors, Department of Primary Industry, and Local Land Services will be in attendance at the meeting and they will be invited to present various aspects on drought relief matters.

Our Meeting

Our meeting today was a Vocational Visit to the Wagga Wagga Men's Shed

Rick Priest, a long standing member of Wollundry gave us a wonderful overview of just how the Men"s Shed works, and also gave us an excellent tutoring in scrounging. He has been instrumental in finding a ceiling for the community room, a fence for the boundaries, a possession of land without taxes, the list goes on(and on!)
The result is a magnificent facility with areas that can cover all manner of skills from woodwork and metal work right through to computing. Each member is able to get assistance in the learning process from many members who were and still are professionals in their fields.
Phil McIntosh presented the Men's Shed with a cheque for $2500 in recognition of the work done for us in running the Gears and Beers. .
Little wonder that this shed won the title Australia's best shed  last year. The Men's Shed members put on a magnificent lunch with soft drinks, mains and sweets, and at the end of the meal a large number of members went through the facility, which is quite extensive.
Rick expressed his thanks to members of the club,
John Ireland, Colin Duff, John Mason and Peter McKinnon, and even liked Wagga City Council!
But the most important part of this facility is the effect it is having on the member's health.

Rotary information
Rotary Information for 23rd of October
With the big emphasis on raising monies for the drought affected communities, a lot of focus has come on to Mental Health.
Australian Rotary Health was a prime mover in bringing mental health to the forefront and de stigmatising it, in the whole of Australia. They have held Forums all over our district in past years and will soon be holding a Mental Health First Aide course here in Wagga .
ARH is the leading NGO providing research grants into both the causes of mental health problems and how it is possible to treat them. The Black Dog doesn't discriminate as has been affirmed by the very privileged in society such as Prince Harry, or the very wealthy such as Packer. Sports people, politicians, mums and dads are all equal targets ! We must find a treatment, and ARH is at the forefront of that fight.

As an aside, a lot of Rotarians confect the Rotary Foundation with ARH. They are separate entities entirely.
The Foundation is the funding arm of Rotary International and makes fund available to all Districts to perform various projects. They also provide grants on a world scale, Global Grants, one of which our club applied for and succeeded in the Congo.
ARH on the other hand is an  Australian venture raising funds for the principal purpose of improving health outcomes in Australia.
They provide research scholarships for Phd students, and for undergraduates who are following a particular line of inquiry. Money has been allocated to such areas as Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone, Heart disease. That list goes on. Our own club provided a Phd Scholarship researching Melanoma. in memory of our long standing member Gordon Braid
