PRESIDENT’S REPORT FOR 7th AUGUST 2018
We welcomed Irene our exchange student and Sally to the meeting for the first time. Sally Puckeridge introduced Irene Chung to club members.

Fighting for our Farmers drought relief fund is a fund supported by Rotary in Australia, National Farmers Federation & Channel 9. Our farmers are in crisis. Record breaking heat and lack of rain means farmers are struggling to feed and water livestock. Families on the land are suffering and they need our help to put food on the table. Rotary in Australia, Channel 9 have partnered with National Farmers Federation launching an appeal to big business and everyday Australians so we can provide some emergency relief. 100% of donations will be distributed to farmers and is tax deductible via Rotary and RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service). The goal is to raise $10M. The amount donated so far is $750K.

A number of comments were made by members which include how and who will administer the funds; If no crops in 2018 then we need to keep our powder dry for autumn 2019; Need to have community fun days conducted by community service clubs in order to get families off the farm for a short time and show that we care and it is no cost to the farming fraternity and a need to have professional people at the community fun days to provide professional support when and where required; With the partnership formed will there be other linkages with other community groups such as CWA to ensure that we are not going over the same areas; Need to have a communication linkage with farming families on an ongoing basis in the region/district so as to provide support and assistance when and where needed; Associated businesses providing services and goods to the farming community will be adversely affected so they will need some form of support as well; Feedback to local service clubs - how will information of needs etc will be channelled to clubs and businesses; Both State and Federal Governments are providing financial support but there will need to have a review from time to time.
Comments have been passed along DG John for consideration and response.

Former member Jim Gibson advised that Wagga Wagga’s Biggest Ever Blokes’ Lunch will be held on Friday 31st August at Commercial Club. Funds raised will be donated for further research into Prostate Cancer.

Congratulations to Rick Priest and members of the Men’s Shed based Ashmont for their 10th Anniversary and the benefits which they provide to the local community.
Thanks to John Smith and Tim Barter for banner and signage display for Saturday markets.

Thanks to members who have paid their subs but a reminder to members who are still to pay subs (annual or quarterly).

Enjoy your day

Our Meeting 07 Aug 2018
President James opened the meeting with Rotary Grace, and proceeded to welcome our visitors,
Irene Chang, our exchange student with host mother Sally Puckeridge. and David Post.
(David was introduced by David Benn who stated that he hoped he didn't want to do that again!)

He congratulated Ric Priest on his ten years with the Wagga Mens Shed. Ric graciously accepted the accolade, but went to some trouble to thank the club for its support, and to thank John Ireland and John Mason for their professional help, along with Colin Duff who presented the group with a complete shed.

Today was Hillis Fellowship Day, so we had no guest speaker.

The talk came around to the drought, inspired by a letter from DG John Glassford. Rotary has partnered with Channel 9 and has set a target of $10m.
A question from the floor as to how the funds were to be distributed promoted quite a bit of discussion. While being very sympathetic to the plight, it was suggested that subsidies reward bad management practices. Not that there should be no help given, but it should be targeted.

In response to this comment, Stuart Heriot suggested that we as a club might put on a "family fun day". The advantage of this is that it encourages men in particular to mix away from their properties." A problem shared is a problem halved"
President James will take back our suggestions to DG John.

The new branding for the Wollundry Saturday Market was displayed during the meeting. It is elegantly simple. A great job!

And treasurer Adrian is looking for dues to be paid. It is important to get your account up to date, so please get the money in as soon as you can.

Sergeant Session
Sergeant for today was David Benn, subbing for John Gray who is on his way to China.
Relentlessly attacking, he removed money from John Egan for watching his wife wash and dry up, and for suggesting how he might better perform at choir. The Mayor was mauled for being at a public meeting and not giving a speech, Phil Burgess was not unnoticed at the Champagne Bar, and John Smith paid up for being tardy in informing Qantas of his current employment status. Paul Murray was wearing an Australian apron but certainly had not asked permission to do so!
Even though we all offered to pay again, David proceeded to tell us about  the Louth Dentist. Neil is considering his options on that one.
Rotary Information
 Did you know?
The Rotary Foundation is a stand alone charity that delivers some 98c in the $ to the causes it represents. Our own club has accessed this fund recently with aide into Africa.
It returns 50% of District Donations to the Clubs for their own local projects, and these are distributed by the Foundation Committee of the District.
The Foundation is Rotary's charity, and does not include any of the other organisations that are supported by Rotary Clubs. ARH, RAWCS, Shelterbox, ROMAC etc are all distinct from the Foundation.

Australian Rotary Health has been supporting Indigenous scholars in their quest to become medical professionals for many years.
*ARH is the major NGO with funding towards research into Mental Health.
*I in 5 indigenous doctors have been supported by the ARH scholarship'
*$2.5 million was granted to research into all aspects of medical research.
*Hat Day is a national event raising funds for Mental Health.

Tree Planting. The planting went ahead last week and a great contingent from Wollundry joined two other clubs, Sunrise and Murrumbidgee, planting some 400 trees.
The idea is environmentally sound as trees are the lungs providing the oxygen we all need, at the same time providing habitat for native species.

Letter From Burmo.

"I am in PRC , An Hui Province  , South of Yangtze in SuSong Town,
Primarily I market school by simply walking around getting my photo taken and the private teachers hand out brochures.
Ma Yan is my long term friend and I am not paid but have an apartment near Teachers Compound .
I eat in private homes of student’s parents or at teachers home(s).
I am the only second “ round eye running dog foreign devil “ to come to this small town of 1 million. The other is Sophie , a French Lawyer, who practises out of Paris and Shanghai—- Ma Yan’s friend.I have met her.
This is the second time I have stayed here.
Although An  Hui Province was formed 1,400 years ago in Song Dynasty the people South of Yangtze are very different from those to the North eg subject of arranged marriages.
See you all in September
